Scotland’s EU Membership

In a few days we will know whether or not Scotland will remain part of the UK. An unprecedented event may occur: one EU member state may become two member states. Or, will they? Will Scotland automatically become a member of the Union? Whilst the EU Commission and many national governments cast doubt on the entitlement of Scotland to be recognised as a member state, arguing that Scotland will need to apply to join the Union, some EU law experts take the opposite position – among them Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, Professor of European Law at Oxford. We put her arguments up for debate in an online symposium.
