Iceland and EU Accession Referendum
The recent referendum held on 29 August 2026 confirmed that 52,8% of Icelandic citizens do not want any change regarding European cooperation and prefer to participate in the European internal market through the European Economic Agreement while actively preserving its national independence and avoiding EU membership. However, in the eyes of the people, the relationship between the EU and Iceland remains stable and positive. Accordingly, the rejection of EU membership should be interpreted as a political embrace of a well-functioning status quo.
