Higher Education and Democratic Resilience
Democracies are particularly vulnerable in the area of higher education, which is often a primary target of populist and authoritarian governments seeking to subordinate and control it. Yet protecting free research, universities, and academic institutions is not only essential for higher education itself; it also strengthens societies’ ability to respond to such threats and attacks through critical thinking and evidence-based knowledge.
Together with the University of Oxford’s Centre for Democratic Resilience and Bucerius Law School, Verfassungsblog aims to monitor, identify, and analyse when higher education comes under pressure, is increasingly eroded, or becomes subject to growing political influence in Germany, Europe, and beyond. In doing so, it seeks to foster resilience by building a shared understanding of threats to the integrity of higher education among academics, policymakers, civil society, and the public.

Die Landtagswahl in Sachsen-Anhalt steht unmittelbar bevor und könnte der AfD erstmalig die Möglichkeit geben, ihre Forderungen und Versprechen einzulösen. Gerade die Wissenschaft bietet sich dafür an: Zum einen verfügen die Länder in der Wissenschaftspolitik über weitreichende Kompetenzen, zum anderen ist sie ein zentrales Feld des rechtspopulistischen Kulturkampfs. Selbst ohne absolute Mehrheit der AfD hätte Tillschneider als AfD-Wissenschaftsminister weitreichende Durchgriffsmöglichkeiten.
